We arrived in the Visitor's Center and were greeted by Elder and Sister McQueen (close relatives of Lightning McQueen according to the children). They gave us a tour of the area starting with the Newell K. Whitney store.
Upstairs from the store was the Whitney's home. It is also the place where the School of the Prophets was held and many of Joseph Smith's early revelations were received such as the Word of Wisdom.
The Whitney's also had a small room where guests could stay the night, and a living room where guests were entertained.
There was also a pair of white bloomers on one of the bed's that Jen would really like to tie dye.
We then took a break from our tour because we wanted to see the Kirtland Temple, but the Community of Christ Church only has specific times that they give tours. So we drove about 2 minutes to the temple and took a tour there, too.
After a tour of the Kirtland Temple we went back to Historic Kirtland where the McQueens continued our tour showing us the Saw Mill and Ashery.
Jen then nursed Evie while the McQueen's showed me the John Johnson Inn.
The Inn had a little museum with copies of old scriptural texts, as well as a little kiosk where information was given about all of the church members that lived in Kirtland at the time. I was able to look up information on my Great Great Great Great Grandfather Thomas Hancock, his son (my Great Great Great Grandfather) Levi Ward Hancock, Levi's wife Clarissa Reed, Clarissa's parents John Reed and Rebecca Bearse (my claim to being 1/128 Pequot Indian), another Great Great Great Grandfather Dimick Baker Huntington. For some reason my Great Great Great Grandfather Abraham Coon and his wife were listed, though they were actually living near Nauvoo when they were baptized, and never lived in Kirtland.
We then continued driving with our next stop in Erie, PA.
We had a picnic on the beach of Peninsula in Lake Erie. Evie's lunch consisted of rocks and sand.
She also had fun playing in a hole that I dug in the sand.
Evie and I then went out to the water and stuck our feet in (Evie's first time in a lake).
From there we drove to Rock City Park in Olean, NY. We were going to have a picnic there, but once again we failed to realize that places close even if the sun hasn't set yet. So we continued on towards Jen's cousins, Tom and Yvonne. We stopped at a gas station on the way to take a bathroom break. Jen had been feeding Evie while we were driving and she ate more than 8 oz of baby food. Evie was looking at Jen smiling when Jen got out of the car to go around and get her. When Jen opened the door Evie was still looking at her smiling, but was covered in throw-up.
Jen got her cleaned up and given that there was only a disgusting outhouse at this gas station I took Evie potty on the hood of the truck. As I was lifting her up to wipe her bum three teenage boys walked out of the gas station while her butt was pointed right at them. They all seemed embarrassed and amused.
And here's how cute Evie looked after being all cleaned up.
