Into the Mystic

Our first weekend in CT was Memorial Day Weekend.  We utilized this 3 day weekend to visit the Mystic area of CT.  We left Friday night after I got off of work and drove down to Camp Niantic by the Atlantic.  It was Evie's first time camping, and it was a lovely little campsite.  I think we were the only tent site in the entire complex.  Everybody else was in campers and trailers and looked like they stayed there for a good portion of the year.  The owners were lovely people that wanted to make sure that we were comfortable, especially with Evie being so young.  We borrowed a mosquito net pavilion from my boss and set our tent and picnic table up inside of it.

On Saturday we drove about 20 minutes to Mystic Aquarium to see all of the different animals there.  Here are a few pictures of us getting ready to go.

One of the main attractions there are the Beluga Whales.  You can tell from these pictures that they enjoy having their pictures taken.

There were also a bunch of lovely luminescent Jelly Fish.

There was a large section that included a variety of different fish, including the "Nemo" fish, which actually only have one female in the entire group, and when it dies one of the males becomes the female.

There was a Ray petting and a Shark petting pool, and an aquarium with a Hammerhead Shark.

We also got to seen the handlers feeding the Penguins, and watched some of them swimming around in the pool.

There was a swamp area with frogs and turtles.

There was a Brain Coral with this interesting pattern on it.

There was a tank with Starfish in it, including this Sunflower Starfish that periodically grows new appendages.

Not only were there turtles and frogs out in the swamps, but also in the tanks inside.

Sometime in the middle of all of this fun we took a break to have some lunch.

After visiting Mystic Aquarium we drove to downtown Historic Mystic and ate dinner at Mystic Pizza, which is the location of the film of the same name.  We walked around, visiting a bookstore and getting some ice cream.  It was all foggy as the dusk fell but it wasn't too scary because there were lots of people around.

The next post will continue our Mystic Adventures.

  1. Jen! I <3 your blog!

Those beluga whales are so cute! I live right by the coast in Alaska, and so many people tell me to look for belugas out there. I haven't seen any yet, but your photos get me excited.
